Job Title: Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Location: Ft. Irwin, CA

Summary: Check Defense is a fast-growing federal contractor seeking a qualified and experienced professional Heavy Equipment Mechanic to support military training by providing maintenance and sustainment operations to ensure availability for a fleet of up to as many as 80 commercial and non-tactical vehicles. This position requires technical expertise in shall performing scheduled, preventive, and corrective maintenance of vehicle and associated equipment including Government Furnished Property (GFP) inaccordance with and in order of precedence, the applicable Technical Manuals (TMs), Government-provided preventive maintenance checklists, or best commercial practices if a checklist is not provided.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Perform quarterly, semi-annual, annual, and bi-annual vehicle or material handling equipment service:
- Oil changes (Engine/Transmission/drivetrain)
- Filters
- Tire replacements, rotations/and balancing
- Brake service
- Vehicle safety checks
- Perform Annual DOT Inspections
- Perform Corrective Maintenance for:
- Brake repair
- Troubleshoot fault codes
- Replace sub-components such as Alternators, starters, power steering pumps andassemblies, belts, and radiators.
- Minor body repair
- Responsible for opening work orders in the IMS to track mission support requirements, including vehicle repairs and recovery efforts.
- Perform repairs or service as needed or in accordance with manufacturer
- Identify warranty work and transport vehicles to the designated dealership or repair
- Perform recovery services on post and down range for all NTC
Minimum Qualifications:
- Mechanics should have a minimum of a high school education, or a GED, with a minimum of 4years of work experience in the maintenance field.
- Experience or training in the inspection and maintenance of CMVs
- Knowledge of inspection standards and regulations
- Valid California-issued Driver’s License.
- Mechanics should have a minimum of a Class B (CDL) or the ability to attain, but a Class A withAir Brake and Hazmat endorsements is preferred.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Strong understanding of manufacturer manuals, technical data, and Government standards.
- Ability to conduct thorough system inspections, operational checks, and preventive maintenance.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working closely with both technical teams and military personnel.
- Flexibility to work varied hours in a dynamic training environment, including possible weekends and holidays, as training schedules demand.
Working conditions:
- Ability to perform duties in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, and rain).
- Must be able to ride or drive in commercial or tactical off-road vehicles and maneuver indesert conditions day or night.
- Exposure to bright flashes of light.
- Noise between 50 dB to 165 dB.
Physical Requirements:
- Do repetitive tasks.
- Requires frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
- Required to stoop under or squat, kneeling, and crouching without difficulty.
- Able to reach with your hands and arms, talk, and hear.
- Lifting: Frequently lift and move up to 35lbs.
- Vision: Requirements for this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
