Job Purpose:
Check Defense is a fast-growing federal contractor seeking a qualified and experienced professional Heavy Equipment Operator. The Heavy Equipment Operator provides support services for the Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) Program Management, Land Rehabilitation and Maintenance (LRAM) at JBLM. ITAM support enables management and maintenance of training land by integrating mission requirements with environmental requirements and sound land management practices. The ideal candidates will perform various tasks related to landscaping, equipment operation, and maintenance in challenging and remote environments.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Knowledge of heavy equipment and the associated safety precautions.
- Knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and precautions in the operation of heavy motorized equipment.
- Operate heavy and light equipment.
- Repair, maintain, and reconstruct the training area lands at JBLM, WA.
- Transverse access trails to training areas.
- Operate various diesel-powered motor vehicles, both wheeled and tracked, such as graders, excavators, compact tract loaders and bulldozers.
- Operate ground clearance machinery such as vegetation mulchers, agricultural tractors, tub grinders, pickup trucks, and four wheel-drive vehicles.
- Operate various towed and power-takeoff equipment: hydro-seeders, drill seeders, fertilizer spreaders, and pesticide sprayers.
- Operate diverse types of hand operated light equipment: chainsaws, brush saws, pruning saws, stump grinders.
- Diagnose and repair machinery or mechanical equipment.
- Dismantle and assemble machines, rotary mower implements, and perform repairs using hand tools.
- Order replacement parts and coordinate major repairs with machine shops.
- Conduct welding using electric resistance methods or manual welding processes.
- Determine welding techniques, machine settings, and assemble parts for welding.
- Follow specifications, control charts, and instructions for welding operations.
- Experience, skills, training, and licenses/certificates indicating proficiency on equipment used to push and grade or load and relocate earth, rip rap, gravel, or other materials; clear brush, stubble, tree stumps, and/or other debris; and repair and maintain access trails to training areas.
- Safely operate articulating dump trucks, utility trucks, and trailers when needed.
- Ability to read, navigate and decipher Geographic Informational Systems (GIS) imagery.
- Ability to utilize a Geographic Positioning System (GPS) device for navigation.
- Ability to document work utilizing digital cameras, GPS Devices, and video recordings.
- Maintain current herbicide applicator licensing requirements by the State of Washington.
- Apply DoD-approved herbicides to noxious weeds using backpack sprayers, ATV boom sprayers, and tractor boom sprayers.
- Wear and maintain all required herbicide applicator and handler Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Required Qualifications:
- United States citizen.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid US issued Driver’s License.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- Ability to pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) background investigation.
- Minimum five (5) years demonstrated relevant experience operating heavy equipment in rough terrain and remote areas.
- Ability to obtain Herbicide Applicator licensing requirements by the State of Washington
Preferred Qualifications:
- Herbicide applicator licensing and experience preferred in Washington State and all required OSHA Certifications.
- Capability to solve repair problems using technical manuals and diagrams.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience conducting land management projects on a military installation or the Pacific Northwest region.
Working condition:
- Outdoors in various weather conditions
- Long workdays.
- Noise between 140db to 165db.
- Work in rough and remote terrain; in weather extremes such as thunderstorms, high heat, and humidity, severe cold and wind.
- Work in the proximity of unexploded ordinance.
- Work in the proximity of military training exercises.
- Exposure to and application of hazardous chemicals and pesticides.
- Exposure to stinging and biting insects, ticks, spiders, venomous snakes, poisonous plants, spines, and thorns.
